How did you attract/address your audience?

During my research stages of my media product I devised a questionnaire in which I asked members of my target audience questions about what they would like in my magazine. The first thing I found was that the most likely people to be the audience for a music magazine was males aged 16-18 so I already knew that I needed to attract male teenagers in particular.

One of the questions asked was what genre of music do you listen to? The results of this showed to be rock, so when I was making my magazine I attracted my audience by making the cover especially more apparent to be rock than any other genre, I did this with the use of colour e.g. black, grey and poses of the band members in my photo, I also found during my research that generally in rock there is more bands than solo artists so I thought it would be more appropriate to feature more than one person on my cover.

One main way in which I attracted my audience was during my questionnaire I asked how much would u pay for a magazine? The majority answer to this was £2-£3 very little said they would pay £3-£5 and no one said that they would pay £5+ with this in mind when I was in the making stages of my magazine I made sure that the price I put on my cover was within the price range that my audience would be willing to pay to not put them off the magazine.

I tried to attract my audience by making my magazine aesthetically pleasing throughout; I think that I successfully did this by making the cover simplistic and grey with some colour, this made the first impressions of my magazine relatable to any rock genre whether it was metal, punk, indie I think my cover would attract any member of that target group and as my magazine progresses I think I successfully managed to keep the continuity but still made it more colourful and attractive to the indie/alternative target audience for example, the use of paint splats on my double page spread and the mass of colour makes that page very attractive and relatable to the indie dress sense.

My questionnaire also showed that people within my target group bought magazines more for the interviews and latest news as opposed to free posters or reviews, so with this in mind when I created my contents page I made sure that the latest news section was slightly larger than the reviews or gig section but that the review section was still fairly large as my research showed that some people did buy magazines for the reviews and posters also.

On the whole, I believe that my media product attracts and addresses my audience extremely well, as I took into account my questionnaire results and followed these all of results while making my magazine.

What kind of media institution might distribute your product & why?

One company that could possibly distribute my magazine would be IPC Media. IPC Media produces over 60 iconic media brands, and print alone reaches almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men and their websites collectively reach over 20 million users every month, so I think that IPC will be a very good distributor for my magazine as they reach wide range of people and currently distribute many other music magazines, such as NME and Kerrang I however feel that my magazine is a mix of the two and is not as heavy as Kerrang but not entirely focused on the indie/alternative genre like NME so my magazine would potentially fill the gap for IPC.

The Making Of My Double-Page Spread

Audience's Reaction

My DPS Interview

For my double page spread interview I took my initial interview questions that I had writen, but I wanted to create a more relxaed chatty feel to the interview so I added additional speech and questions where I felt it was nesseccary.

Faded pink skinnies second album ‘friends requests confirmed’ is out soon, so we decided to drag them in for a chat about the new album and give you the chance to ask them some questions of your own.

So your new album, ‘friends requests confirmed’ is out soon? First of all, where did the idea or the name of the album come from is there some sort of message behind it?

Stuart - ‘No not at all, it was a completely random name for the album, we were just lounging around thinking of what we could potentially call the album, and the name just came to us.’

So the name doesn’t tie in with any of the songs on the album?

Stuart - ‘Erm, no, not really.’

Ok, there have also been a lot of rumours that this is your final album, is there any truth in this?

Sam - ‘Definitely not, we are not even close to splitting up, or even to stopping making music, we love what we do and once this album is released we cannot wait to get started on a new one.’

Before you get working on a new one, do you have a tour lined up to support the new album?

Sam - ‘Oh yes definitely, we love touring and will absolutely be scheduling some tour dates soon.’

Will any of these dates be in the UK?

Sam - ‘Without doubt, we can’t go on tour without coming to the UK can we.’

Good, im sure a lot of your fans will be glad to hear that, Ok, what are the worst things about being on tour?

Sam - ‘Erm, for me one of the worst things has to be sharing a bathroom on the bus with 2 other guys all day and night’

Luke - ‘Yeah that is one of the worst, and having to sleep near each other, because there’s always a snorer.’

Who do you think you might ask to support you, any names come to mind?

Stuart - Erm, we’ve always wanted to go on tour with ‘the hype’ we love their sound, we’ve always been good friends with them, and the new album took a lot of inspiration from their sounds.’

Really, so the new album is different to your last?

Stuart - Not drastically different, there are some songs on their that many of our fans will be surprised by but, will hopefully I think still really enjoy. Fingers crossed.’

My Interview Questions

Here are my questions that I will ask during the band interview, the interview is going to be based on the new album release of the band, as I found this to be a rather interesting topic for my audience and is usually found in double page spreads. These questions were based on what I personally would expect/want to read in an interview, what my audience expects/wants to see in and interview and on interviews I had already seen and read during my research:

I may also feature in my double page spread some small additional questions that would have been sent in aand asked by fans of the band.

Final Sketches (Double-Page Spread)

After drafting my initial sketches I then drew up my final layout designs in neat:

I think this is the one I will chose, I think that the first one is too cramped:

Double Page Spread Content Research

For my double page spread, I first wasnt too sure what to base it on however during my questionnair research when I asked my audience what they want from a magaizne the majority said interviews and latest news, with this in mind I decided that the best option would be to feature an artist interview, which will aslo contain latest news that will therefore, attract my audience.

In order to write a good interview I researched some band interviews on the internet, I looked at various interview videos:

http://youtu.be/ebirot5JEQU

And even read several interviews about album releases online:

http://www.metalunderground.com/interviews/

I found many topics that my double page spread could be based on such as, tours, album releases, band rumours or just on a new up and coming band. However the one I felt was the most interesting was an interview on album releases.

Overall I really felt that doing this helped me create a better interview, as before I was not too sure of what to include in my double page spread, or what specific questions should be asked, after researching various interviews I have decided on my interview being based on a new album release from the band, as this is a quite popular and interesting topic found in many interviews.

Initial Sketches (Double-Page Spread)

For the planning of my double page spread I drafted some initial layout ideas:
